Leveraging long-term stays by foreigners to boost regional revitalization and global competitiveness

“Right now, Korea has a prime opportunity to capture the digital nomad market. Thanks to the global attention from the Korean Wave, plus Korea’s strengths in safety, transport, and daily infrastructure, the country already offers world-class quality of life. If remote workers from abroad make Korea their base and stay long term, this becomes more than tourism — it becomes a way to attract top global talent and revive declining regions.”

Digital nomads refer to people who work in professions that allow them to work from anywhere using digital devices such as mobile phones, laptops, and tablets. While some are corporate employees, many are freelancers. They often work remotely while traveling the world. It is estimated that there are about 35 million digital nomads worldwide, and their annual consumption is known to exceed 1,000 trillion KRW.
When a visa is attached to this concept, it refers to a special visa for those wishing to stay long-term while working remotely from abroad. Estonia was the first in the world to introduce such a digital nomad visa, and Korea has been operating a pilot program from January of this year until the end of the year.

CNN has turned its attention to the 'Digital Nomad Visa,' a new type of work visa introduced this year as a potential solution to South Korea's population crisis caused by its low birth rate. This visa allows remote workers to stay for up to two years, enabling them to work remotely and vacation within Korea.
On the 22nd (local time), CNN stated, "South Korea’s digital nomad visa is about more than just travel," adding that "some experts believe it could be a viable way to increase the workforce in a country with an incredibly low birth rate." The South Korean Ministry of Justice has been piloting the so-called 'Digital Nomad' (Workcation) visa since January 1st of this year to attract high-income personnel from overseas companies who work remotely while traveling the world.
Employment or profit-making activities within Korea are restricted, and a separate work visa is required for local employment. The period of stay is one year from the date of entry and can be extended for up to two years.

Digital nomads refer to people who work freely while traveling the world using information technology (IT) devices. The digital nomad visa allows foreigners to stay in Korea for 1–2 years while maintaining their employment in their home countries. As environments allowing work from anywhere with just a digital device are created, the number of countries introducing this visa is increasing.
CNN reported on the 22nd (local time) that “some observers believe the digital nomad visa could be about more than just making travel easier,” adding that “it could be a way to increase the workforce in South Korea, which has recorded an extremely low birth rate.”
Seo Jung-ho, a professor at the George Washington University Institute for Korean Studies, argued in an interview with CNN that the digital nomad visa would serve as an opportunity for more foreigners to visit Korea.
